Deborah Francis completes the Brighton Half Marathon!

Despite some awful weather conditions and the race nearly being cancelled, the Brighton Half Marathon runners were ready and raring to go on Sunday 23 February.

Deborah Francis, Solicitor in our Litigation and Dispute Resolution team was flying the flag for Griffith Smith and joined forces with a team from Together Co, who are one of our nominated charities.

Why are we running to raise money for Together Co?

36,000 people in our city are always or often lonely. Loneliness and social isolation are deadly – a lack of social connections has been shown to be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Together Co is the only dedicated loneliness charity in our city operating the largest national one-to-one befriending service and working with GP surgeries to deliver social prescribing that helps people find places and people they need to feel happier and healthier.

Together Co services are uniquely powered by over 400 incredible volunteers who give their time every week to help someone who otherwise would be chronically lonely. Last year, this amounted to more than 14,000 hours with over 1,000 people receiving help.

Demand for these services is increasing in our city and the charity needs more fantastic fundraisers to enable them to reach more people in need. This has never been more important against a backdrop of funding cuts and grant restrictions.

Back to the Half Marathon! This was Deborah’s first attempt at any kind of marathon and she ran the 13 miles with her personal trainer, Zoe. Zoe had been putting Deborah through her paces during the training process and Deborah was out in all kinds of weather…which probably was essential training, given the conditions on the day!

Here are some statistics for you;

  • Out of 7,697 women Deborah came in at 1,862
  • Deborah was in the ‘women of 50 group’ and she came in at 217

The Together Co team and Deborah have raised an incredible £9,500 to date and they are keen to smash £10k – if you would like to donate, you can do so here >

We wonder if Deborah is now looking at her next challenge…a full marathon?!
