Collecting your customers’ personal data for contact tracing?

Many restaurants, bars and pubs opened at the weekend, with many more to follow suit in the coming weeks.

Contact tracing in small businesses may be a vital way to keep another pandemic at bay, however, businesses should be aware of their obligations when dealing with Personal Data.

The ICO guidance offers the following advice:

  • Ask for only what’s needed.
  • Be transparent with customers.
  • Carefully store the data.
  • Don’t use it for other purposes.
  • Erase it in line with government guidance.

Deputy Chief Executive of the ICO, Paul Arnold, has said “We’ve published ICO advice – clear, simple steps that businesses can take as they introduce customer and visitor records. And we’ll be supporting government guidance with a series of Q and A’s on our Coronavirus Online Hub that will give more detail. We also have a team of experts offering advice and support through our Small Business Helpline”.
